A rich history
Malaysian and Chinese fishers first inhabited Koh Samui, but tourism has imposed itself in recent decades and allowed the island to open up to the world.
Located in the southern part of Thailand, where Islam dominates, the Buddhist identity remains major in Koh Samui. Thai people of various origins, you will be under the charm of the Samui's, and they're welcome in "the land of smiles."
The mixture of traditions, beliefs, and cultures has allowed the island to create a unique and peaceful identity that you will not find anywhere else.
Breathtaking landscapes
Koh Samui is known for its paradisiacal setting, soft sand, and turquoise water. Whether you're an amateur or a novice diver, don't forget your fins, mask, and snorkel to discover the island's marine depths. You can observe the coral reef at Koh Tao, a great site, thanks to the shallow, warm and azure waters.
Nature lovers will find happiness in the heart of the jungle of Koh Samui, where they can bathe in the many waterfalls. Among them, you can discover the Na Muang waterfalls, the most popular twin waterfalls of the island, located in the south of the island.
You can't miss Ko Angthong, the marine national park of Mu Ko Ang Thong with 42 pristine islands on 102 km2. This string of islets consists of little natural paradises covered with tropical forests of all shapes and sizes, heavenly beaches, and coconut trees in turquoise waters: a necklace of emeralds scattered in the sea.
An authentic and serene culture
The inhabitants are mainly Buddhist, so you will find many temples to visit, the temple of the "Big Buddha" for example, known for its golden cover or others of ochre color. Do not forget the Magic Garden, where you will observe magnificent sculptures of angels, animals, and Buddhas; it is an incredible natural place.
Chinese influences have also left their mark, with Sinothai temples like Wat Plai Laem and its statue representing Guanyin with 18 arms.
Let's not forget the Muslim community with its village of Hua Thanon in the southeast of the island and its magnificent mosque and its tiny fishing boats.
For sports and action lovers, Thai boxing is the national sport. You can watch the fights at the Chaweng stadium, but be careful not to be too sensitive... For calm spirits, the practice of yoga and meditation are also prevalent.
If you want to get involved in the local life, it will be possible for you to do volunteer work: preservation of some animal species, teaching English to children, or protecting the reefs.

Ton parcours ? 🛣️
Française, originaire d'Aix-en-Provence, j'ai quitté la France en juillet 2025 avec mon mari Philippe et nos enfants pour nous installer à Koh Samui, notre toute première expatriation.
On a tout quitté pour vivre notre rêve : ce n'était pas un coup de tête, on a préparé le projet pendant deux ans, lieu de vie, visas, budget ... avant de sauter le pas.
Ce qui t'anime dans la vie ? 💛
Vivre notre rêve, en famille. Voir nos enfants grandir dans un autre environnement, s'ouvrir à une autre culture, développer une autre façon de voir le monde.
Chaque jour ici me nourrit de ce qu'on vit, des rencontres qu'on fait, des petites victoires du quotidien qu'on ne remarquerait même plus en France.
Et surtout, me sentir libre, d'avoir fait un choix qui nous ressemble vraiment, plutôt que de suivre un chemin tout tracé.
Pourquoi être Holicoach ? 🎒
J'ai vécu très récemment tout ce qu'une famille traverse en s'installant ici, les questions pratiques, les doutes, la logistique avec des enfants.
Devenir Holicoach, c'est pouvoir transmettre ce recul à d'autres familles qui arrivent, pas comme une experte de la culture thaïlandaise, mais comme quelqu'un qui est passée par là très récemment.
Quel aspect de la culture thaïlandaise as-tu envie de partager et pourquoi ? 👀
Les fêtes traditionnelles thaïlandaises, sans hésiter. On a eu la chance de célébrer Loy Krathong dans un lieu peu touristique, avec les locaux, on avait revêtu des tenues traditionnelles thaïlandaises pour l'occasion, et je crois que ça a été apprécié. Un moment magique, loin de l'image qu'on peut s'en faire de l'extérieur.
On a aussi vécu Songkran, où on avait joué le jeu en portant des chemises à fleurs comme le veut la coutume, cette fête a une symbolique très forte, et c'est la première fois qu'on s'est sentis vraiment proches des Thaïlandais.
C'est cette proximité-là que j'ai envie de faire vivre aux Holiworkers : sortir du tourisme et vivre les traditions avec les locaux, pas juste les observer.
Un truc sympa pour les holiworkers ? ✨
Ne restez pas cantonnés à Chaweng ou Bophut, les zones les plus touristiques ! Allez découvrir Nathon ou Lipa Noi, le vrai Koh Samui local, loin des resorts.
À Nathon, le marché de nuit du samedi soir est un super moment pour se plonger dans le quotidien local, loin de l'effervescence touristique.
Et à Lipa Noi, les couchers de soleil sur une plage calme et préservée n'ont rien à envier aux spots les plus prisés de l'île.
Ton site préféré à Koh Samui ? 📍
Le temple Plai Laem, sans hésiter. La première fois que j'y suis allée, j'ai pleuré tellement c'était beau, un endroit qui m'a marquée dès la première visite et où j'aime toujours autant retourner.
Ton plat préféré ? 🍽️
Le Panang au poulet, pour sortir des classiques, un curry riche et parfumé que j'adore. Sinon, en valeur sûre, le Pad Kra Pao au poulet reste toujours un plaisir.
